Outreach Center Update:Royerford Location

The future of PVA "Center"

We reported earlier about that a small group led by Fred Danziger was investigating the possibility of establishing a PVAC outreach center in Royersford.

A committee was formed to explore the proposed 3,000-square-foot space on Main Street, offered rent-free for five years. The touring took place on Friday, January 29, meeting with the property owner and assessing how the space might—or might not—fit PVAC’s needs. As with all major initiatives, this was a collaborative and thoughtful process.

The committee and Board determined that the space did not fit PVAC's needs at this time due to renovation costs and accessibility issues.

The committee has decided to continue a search for something more suitable.

Thank you to all who continue to bring ideas, curiosity, and care to PVAC. Your engagement is what allows our organization to grow thoughtfully and remain responsive to our community.

Exploring a New Possibility for PVAC: An Outreach Center

The future of PVA "Center"

At our Board Meeting held on Wednesday, January 21, at Seasons Café, the conversation was full of energy, thoughtful ideas, and a shared sense of curiosity about the future of Perk Valley Art Center.

One idea in particular sparked strong interest and lively discussion: the possibility of establishing a PVAC outreach center in Royersford. Board member Fred Danziger introduced an opportunity to explore a 3,000-square-foot space on Main Street, offered rent-free for five years. While still very early in the process, the concept immediately generated enthusiasm and thoughtful questions about how such a space could support PVAC’s mission, programming, and community connections.

To better understand the potential of this opportunity, a small group will be touring the space on Friday, January 29, meeting with the property owner and assessing how the space might—or might not—fit PVAC’s needs. This visit is an important first step in gathering information, sharing perspectives, and determining what possibilities exist.

Fred has agreed to lead this exploratory effort, with input from board members and others who bring a range of experience and insight to the conversation. As with all major initiatives, this will be a collaborative and thoughtful process.

At this stage, no decisions have been made. This is simply an opportunity to learn, ask questions, and imagine what might be possible. More information will be shared with members as the process unfolds, and we look forward to keeping everyone informed along the way.

Thank you to all who continue to bring ideas, curiosity, and care to PVAC. Your engagement is what allows our organization to grow thoughtfully and remain responsive to our community.

Stay tuned — more news to come.

From Games to Goals: Highlights of the PVAC Leadership Retreat

PVAC Leadership Retreat: Laughter, Connection & Big Ideas

On August 11, 14 of us from the Perkiomen Valley Art Center gathered at the cozy home of our president, Colleen Algeo, for a special Leadership Retreat. Two brand new members joined us, and right away it felt like we were among friends.

We kicked things off with “The Unexpected Game.” Each person secretly wrote down something surprising they’ve done in life. The answers were hilarious, heartwarming, and sometimes jaw-dropping—turns out our artists have lived some pretty adventurous lives! Guessing who wrote what broke the ice instantly and had us all laughing together.

From there, the retreat shifted into meaningful reflection.

"The Stick it to Colleen Game"
Using sticky notes (to respond) we stuck our comments on Colleen's art school self portrait. First up, we celebrated PVAC’s recent successes including:

YAYS

Three vibrant art shows
Inspiring art talks
New classes and Plein Air Outings
And the friendships that keep our community strong.

Also stickie: Our New Website, Monday Meet Ups, New Members, the MCCC show, meetings now held at Peter Becker Community, The Dedication and Excitement of Our members, plus their willingness to help out, The Hill School Show, the Art Talks, and leadership that welcomes new ideas.

WANTS

We also weren’t shy about talking through challenges and brainstorming how to make PVAC even better moving forward.

The collection of what the group who like to see happen includes:

Oil painting classes, a full schedule of activities (have you checked out the new calendar page?), a connection to younger artists (maybe sponsoring a youth exhibit), more sharing of idea on our blog (do members know they can make submissions?), more people at the summer picnic, Facebook group so we can be more spontaneous with our art meet ups, year round plein air events, more people to use the website, broaden details like rain dates, if there is food, alternate dates on our events, a budget (Okay, that was Colleen), More clarity on the prizes at the member show, more shows, advertising for shows, increase awards, local field trip to Souderton - "Eye Curious", Exhibit B and Lunch in town, offer an art camp, a larger place for classes, 2 or 3 people shows, Board Meetings on a more predictable schedule, communication via text messaging, indoor outdoor picnic place - maybe Penny Packer Mills.

VISIONS

What made the day extra special was the mix of fun and honest conversation. We dreamed about what the future of PVAC could look like—new events, new collaborations, and new ways to bring people together through art. They included: Our own building: An actual PVAC Center with a coffee shop! (love it), to strengthen relationships via art, a resource center on the website including a list of art galleries in the surrounding area and places to buy art supplies, An art supply swap/benefit, and more member participation.

The retreat wrapped up with a sense of excitement and connection. Everyone left with smiles on their faces and fresh energy for the year ahead.

Big thanks to everyone who came, shared, laughed, and imagined alongside us. Here’s to a creative and inspiring year ahead at PVAC!

PVAC PLEIN AIR PAINTING

PVAC is working out final details of our upcoming Plein Air Painting. Emails will go out soon with details.

Your browser does not support the video tag.

Plein Air Painting with PVAC 2025

10 PLEIN AIR TIPS

1. PLAN AHEAD- Prepare your Plein Air Travel bag of art supplies and equipment well ahead of time. You can find a basic lightweight adjustable aluminum easel for around $40 that works for Oil and Acrylic boards.

2. CLOTHING- Dress for the weather in layers. Wear neutral colors because sunlight reflects off your clothes and will affect the perception of color on the painted surface. Temperature will change as the day goes on. Hats are of prime importance in all weather. A pair of comfortable walking/hiking shoes is advisable. Also, it’s best NOT to wear sunglasses while painting. Pick a spot where you and your canvas/paper are in the shade for more accurate color interpretation.

3. EQUIPMENT/SKETCHBOOK- Remember, less is best. Use light-weight outdoor painting gear, easels, canvas boards or pastel panels. Your location may be a hike from the car. Use an organized oil / acrylic palette or organized pastel holder. Have a small sketchbook with you and some type of drawing implements from pencils to markers. Bring several brushes, not everything you have. Same with paints. Again, always consider the weight. Make up an organized and designated Plein air equipment bag ready to go. If you are tempted to bring more (leave it in your car). However, choose a sturdy easel that will not be blown over on a windy day.

Don’t bring tubes of paint. Load up your palette with the colors you need ahead of time before you leave your studio. A limited palette works better for Plein air paintings. Invest in a wet paint carrier for this purpose. Masterson Sta-Wet Airtight carrier has 2 sizes and they are lightweight. It can also be used to transport a wet canvas home. Another option is an empty pizza box. Also, bring a water container.

4. BUG SPRAY/SUNBLOCK/WATER- Always have these items. Bring bottled water to drink at your painting location, and snacks to keep you going.

5. PICKING YOUR SPOT- Find a place you feel comfortable, safe and inspired. Look for interesting arrangements of light and shadow.

6. TIME- Best lighting conditions are early morning sunrise to noon or late afternoon into sunset.

7. WEATHER- Always be mindful of the weather. In case of gusty wind, be close to your set up so you can hold your painting equipment, so it does not get blown over. Hint: Weight your easel with stones on location.

8. TRANSPORT- You will need a place to store wet oil paintings and/or keep pastels safe in transport. Pizza boxes or other flat cardboard boxes or Masterson Sta-Wet Airtight are handy for transportation in your car.

9. REFERENCE PHOTOS- Use your cellphone or camera. Take pictures throughout the day for light reference later.

10. SIZE- Plein Air paintings are usually smaller in size: 6"x8", 8"x10", 9"x12", or the size of your WC block.

GENERAL ON-SITE PLEIN AIR PROCESS

1.)Tone your canvas/board at home and make sure it is dry.

2.)When you are on-site find a suitable location preferable in the shade

3.)Set up

4.)Take a photo of the subject in case the weather changes and you have to leave before being finished.

5.)Work quickly and loosly.

6.)Bring a box to carry the wet canvas/board home.

Happy Thanksgiving

Happy Thanksgiving from the Perkiomen Valley Art Center!

As we gather to reflect on the year, we are filled with gratitude for our vibrant artistic community. Together, we welcomed new board members, hosted three remarkable art shows—including our Member Show at the Mennonite Heritage Center, the Body of Work Show at Montgomery County Community College, and the Juried Show at the Hill School.

We also had the privilege of hosting five inspiring Art Talks, offering classes throughout the year, and supporting the next generation of artists by sponsoring a scholarship for a high school senior.

None of this would have been possible without your talent, dedication, and support. Thank you for being an essential part of our journey. Wishing you a Thanksgiving filled with joy, creativity, and cherished moments.

With gratitude,
Announcing the Winners of the 68th Annual Juried Show!

This past Sunday, the Perkiomen Valley Art Center proudly revealed the award winners of the 68th Annual Open Juried Show at the Boyer Gallery! With a well-attended reception and over 130 impressive submissions, our distinguished juror had the challenging task of selecting the winners from an array of extraordinary pieces. Each awarded artwork reflects the skill, vision, and dedication of its creator, and we are honored to showcase the talent and creativity within our artistic community. Thank you to all who joined us to celebrate the art that is being created in our community and the many exceptional artists who submitted their work!

If you missed the reception, there is still time to see the show. It runs through December 13 at the Hill School Center for the Arts, Boyer Gallery, 766 Beech Street, Pottstown PA. Access the gallery by calling Ellen Nelson at 610-705-1040 for an advance appointment.

Special Awards: Special Awards at PVAC shows are largely driven by our donors, who generously provide both the funding and criteria for these honors. These awards are a cherished community tradition, offering a unique way for individuals to honor or memorialize someone who has inspired them. In a “pay it forward” spirit, they provide an ongoing legacy that uplifts our artists. With each show, PVAC welcomes individuals and organizations to help inspire and support participating artists through these meaningful awards. Thank you to each of our donors.

Photo of guests greeting at the reception.

Show Runs Through June 8

20+ Artists Featured & 100+ Guests at the Reception

We are thrilled to announce that our recent art show "May the Art Be with You!" was a tremendous success! Thanks to the incredible talent of our artists, the help of our new friends at Montgomery County Community College (MCCC), and the enthusiastic support from all of you, the event exceeded all expectations. The MCCC gallery director, Patrick Rodgers and a few of his colleagues worked tirelessly to hang the show for us and we are very appreciative.

Unlike our member show or juried show, this show gave PVAC members the opportunity to showcase a body of work. Some members had as many as ten different pieces featured. The exhibition showcased an amazing array of artworks, from stunning paintings and sculptures to captivating photographs and mixed media pieces.

A reception which was held in the evening on May 23 and was well attended thanks in part to a new publicity initiative by Deb Nyman that provided individualized promo materials to each of the artists. The turnout was fantastic, with art lovers from all around coming together to celebrate creativity and support our local artists.

According to show coordinator, Sharon Gross, "Over a hundred people came out for the reception! It was a great evening! Special thanks to Herb Breyer for providing the music and Cathy McIllhenny for giving the art talk. I want to also thank Mike Tomasso, Edna Rambo, and Dianne Cram for helping with the refreshments. Colleen Algeo took photos of the reception, the link to the photo gallery is below."

Bud worked for many years as a floral designer and was an active member of the Pennsylvania Lilly Society, but his greatest love is quilts. Designing new patterns in various shapes, forms, and bright colors energizes him. For this exhibit, Bud used various materials from silk neckties to oriental patterns, and colorful cottons.
PVAC Grants Local Students Scholarships

Scholarships Awarded thanks to the Generosity of PVAC Members

Congratulations to Elizabeth Krantz (Perk Valley High School Class of 2023) and Abel Alarcon Ortega (Souderton Area High School Class of 2023) the recipients of this year's PVAC Scholarship Awards.

The recipients were chosen by their High School Administrations as demonstrating excellence in their art studies. PVAC through the generosity of its members and additional fundraising via their "Hearts for the Arts" program was able to provide a larger award than in prior years. Each recipient received a $300 award this year (an increase of $200/per student) to celebrate their High School successes to help them further their education.

According to PVAC President, Colleen Algeo, "Perkiomen Valley Art Center is excited to see the students succeed. We are thrilled to be able to increase our support this year and invest in the future education of Elizabeth and Abel. They are highly accomplished student artists and have worked hard to earn the respect of their teachers. More, there are many artists in the PVAC group who make themselves available as mentors to emerging artists. We hope that the help we have given them today provides an opportunity to creative connections and continues as they move forward with their career plans."

Colleen Algeo & Kathy Bohn, PVAC Vice President attended the award ceremony at Perk Valley High School on May 17 to meet and present the award to Elizabeth Krantz, who was very appreciative of the recognition and the monetary award.

by Colleen Algeo

We owe long-time member, Pat Wilson-Schmid a debt of gratitude. At the March Board Meeting Pat surprised everyone by humbly offering to pay for a new tool. It is not just any tool, but an all purpose tool in the form of a software program that helps non-profits like ours take care of business, collaborate, and provide an enhanced member experience. The tool’s name is Wild Apricot. When asked why she decided to fund the software she said, “PVAC has done so much for me! I’d like us to focus on the mission and forget the hassles. Us old farts will be gone some day and this program will make it easier for future generations to continue. I am helping that happen because I love what PVAC has done for me. ”

Pat took classes with the PVAC founder Charles R. Gardner and described him as a progressively minded teacher who always made you feel good about your work. She added that she, like he, wanted PVAC to go on. Charles made quite an impression on Pat. In fact, she loaned us one of Charles’ originals for our 60th Annual Member Show and can describe how he created the painting.

Pat has spent her life studying her craft. She revealed, “The act of painting is who I am. In addition to unusual lighting effects I enjoy showing my artist’s handwriting in my work. While viewers experience the painting, I hope they see me through the brushstrokes, transcending time. My want is to share the act of painting with my viewer. The texture of each brush stroke reveals my effort, my energy, my desire to say, ‘See, you are here with me, and I might stay with you forever in this painting.’ ” What I didn’t tell you is that Pat has promised to pay for this software in perpetuity. How’s that for staying with us forever! There aren’t enough thank yous, Pat, for kickstarting and sustaining our the new website you see here!

Here is a poem by her that we thought might inspire you.

A Painter’s Journey

Partake of life through all the bloom
of each and every cycle.
And in the morning of each part
anticipate the glories.
Look back upon the evenings.
Ask what of worth to keep.
Move a level onward,
renewed and wiser still.
Grow in heart.
Prepare to leave a mark, a word, a thought
Transcend your span to be fulfilled
in future human kind.

Member Show Results

Member Show Results
People with Creative Minds Really do see the World Differently.

by Colleen Algeo, President

What is it about a creative work like a painting that elicits our awe and admiration? Is it the thrill of being shown something new, something different, something the artist saw that we did not? The idea that some people see more possibilities than others is central to the concept of creativity.

“Others have seen what is and asked why, I have seen what could be and asked why not.” ~Picasso

This was truly demonstrated at our recent Member Show. There are so many wonderful creative works being shared. The reception was a brilliant success with friendly camaraderie and lots of idea exchanging. Oh and great snacks! I applaud everyone who participated and am grateful to our donors and volunteers who helped it come together. I really think our founder Charles R. Gardner would have been thrilled.

The leadership team is committed to this very concept with the goal of having those new insights show us the way forward. New offerings are coming your way in hopes of eliciting a little awe and excitement from you about PVAC. Here are a few more photos from our 60th Annual Member Show.
