STEVEN WHITE – Transition from Watercolor to Oil Painting

We are excited to welcome back Steven White as our presenter on Wednesday, May 16th at 7:00 at Encore Center, Harleysville. Steven is a former PVAC member and has demonstrated his exceptional painting talents for us in the past. This time he will be demonstrating and talking about his adventure into oil painting. Steven is a self-taught artist, his traditional landscapes of Pennsylvania farms and woodlands, and Adirondack Mountains have awarded him with regional and national recognition. There will be a brief business meeting and light refreshments before the program.

56th Annual Member Show

If it is PVAC’s Annual Membership Exhibition – it must be spring, but it was hard to tell on Sunday, April 8th with temperatures still hovering in the mid-40s. But we did have a great turn-out for a lovely afternoon reception and Dave Thomas’s amazing bonsai wisteria sent a spring fragrance throughout the gallery. Bud Slemmer’s magic touch created the lovely table setting and floral arrangements.  And there were so many tasty snacks – thanks to all who contributed.  We give a special thank you to staff at the Mennonite Heritage Center for once again providing the gallery space and an artist award. The afternoon

Program on N. C. Wyeth illustrations for the book Poems of American Patriotism, a collection owned by The Hill School. (Published by Charles Scribner & sons, 1922)   All attending the February meeting and program enjoyed Ellen’s presentation of the N.C. Wyeth paintings in the Hill School collection. Ellen was very informative regarding the artist’s life and work and showed us images of the paintings. Perhaps we’ll take Ellen up on her offer to see the actual art work at the Hill School. Thank you to Kathy and Lori and all who provided yummy refreshments, and Dave for taking pictures.

Mick McAndrews demonstration

A Fine Afternoon!

Our first winter Sunday afternoon program was very enjoyable with a good sized group present to enjoy the watercolor demonstration by Mick McAndrews. Mick provided us with great advice on how to approach our paintings stating that “there is no such thing as a perfect painting!” Mick narrowed it down that everything you need to know to be a successful artist is to simplify and remember three things: 1. Interesting shapes are more important than the perfect subject. 2. A variety of edges; soft, hard and rough texture are more important than perfect reality. 3. Darks, mid-range and light values are more important than color.
