    Classes begin September 8.

    Dates/Time – September 8, 2025 – October 27, 2025 (8 sessions); Monday mornings from 10:00 am – 12:00 pm.

    Class Description -

This eight-week course on painting buildings in a landscape will feature at least 4 types of buildings, with examples of how to render others. Keeping a simple color pallet, we will explore painting timber-framed buildings, stone buildings, town houses, thatch cottages, working buildings and waterfront buildings. We will complete 3 to 4 paintings with examples and demonstrations on the remaining buildings.

Drawing will be provided for tracings plus the images to work from. (Digital tablets are recommended to work from; color xerox copies are also available.) All images are my own so you may use them for shows, sales, or whatever you wish.

Materials List – Students must bring their own supplies to class.

    • ·       Brushes – Wash brush plus an assortment of rounds.
    • ·       Watercolor Paints – Basic colors including cadmium yellow, yellow ochre, raw sienna, burnt sienna, alizarin crimson, violet, ultra marine blue, cerulean blue, and hookers green.

Paper: One or two sheets of Arches 140 lb. 22 x 30” cold press paper, either natural or bright white. You can cut the paper half, then half again; you will have 4, 11 x 15” sheets to work on.

I have made the drawings 11 x 14” as that is a standard mat size that will fit a standard frame. If you wish to make your piece this size, you will only get two 11 x 14” sheets  (12 x 15” for stretch area).

    Other supplies to bring -

    ·       Soft cotton rags

    ·       #2 pencil

    ·       Kneaded Eraser

    ·       Palette

    ·       Water container and something to carry all your supplies.

    ·       Masking (or artists’) tape

    ·       Hair dryer

    ·       Micron 01 waterproof brown ink pen

    ·       12” ruler with cork (the cork keeps ink from bleeding under the ruler)

Please email me for the images after you register. I will send them to you so that you can have them drawn and ready for class. This will allow us to start painting right away!

Watercolor Fundamentals and More with Linda Gerhard

    Classes begin September 9.

    Dates/Time – September 9, 2025 – November 4, 2025 (no class October 14). 8 sessions, Tuesday mornings from 10:00 am – 12:00 pm.

    Class Description -

Whether you are brand new to watercolor or have some experience with the medium, all skill levels are welcome! Instruction and support are provided to meet your specific level of experience. If you are ready to explore watercolor beyond basic techniques, this curriculum includes some topics that were curated by the students who participated in the Spring 2025 class. Beginning students will receive instruction on basic watercolor techniques. Returning students will learn how to create textures and make your background areas lively. Each class will begin with a short demonstration of a technique. Students will have the opportunity to practice the technique and apply it to subject matter of their choice. For some techniques the instructor will provide subjects to paint.

Supply List: Students must bring their own supplies to class

    * If you already have watercolor supplies, please use what you have.

     Please bring the following supplies:

*Watercolor Paper – Papers that are 100% cotton are highly recommended.  9”x12” pad of watercolor paper or a watercolor block in a size you are comfortable working with.

*Paint – Good brands include: Winsor & Newton, M. Graham, Daniel Smith, Holbein, Maimeri Blu, Sennelier, and DaVinci.

Colors - Cobalt Blue (or cobalt deep) and Ultramarine Blue (or French ultramarine)

Permanent Rose (or Quinacridone Rose) and Cadmium Red (or Vermillion)

Lemon Yellow (or Hansa Yellow) and Cadmium Yellow Light (or Gamboge or New Gamboge)

Optional - Burnt Sienna and Sepia or Vandyke Brown

*Brushes –There are good synthetic blends available that are good choices for this class.

1” flat (wash) brush or large round brush - # 10 or #12 (good for skies and covering larger areas)

    # 4 round brush (small diameter)

#6 round brush or #8 round brush (medium diameter)

Note: Jerry’s Artarama (www.jerrysartarama.com) has a Mimik Squirrel Try Me set of 5 synthetic brushes. This set has all the brushes you need for this class, for about $15!

Other supplies to bring to class

    • Students must bring a table covering to protect your workspace
    • Reference photos taken by you or taken by others who have given you permission to use them.
    • A watercolor palette that has wells for paint and mixing areas OR a white shallow dinner plate; an 8”/9” Hefty foam plate is a good alternative.
    • 2 containers for water. One-pound deli containers are great water containers.
    • Paper towels.
    • A rigid support to secure your watercolor paper unless you are using a watercolor block.
    • Masking tape or Painters’ tape (for securing paper to the support). 1” wide works well.
    • A #2 pencil or mechanical pencil
    • kneaded eraser
    • Hair dryer to speed up drying, optional but helpful.
